OUR HISTORY

Late 1980s

Founded by Esther Newman, the idea for Leadership Montgomery came about in the late 1980’s in response to a need for more engaged civic leaders in the county.

The organization quickly recruited a board of directors, developed nine program session days (then called seminars) and accepted the applications for the first class of the Connecting Our Region’s Execs (CORE) program.

The first year of the program ran from September 1989- June 1990 and had 32 leaders from the county, representing business, government, and nonprofit.

1995

Youth Leadership Montgomery begins as a unique program, a partnership with Maryland Leadership Workshops, that provides students entering grades 9-12 with the skills necessary to achieve success in all facets of their lives, and inspires them to exercise their leadership in their schools and communities.

Youth Leadership Montgomery ran annually through 2017, when the decision was made to expand into other areas of programming.

2002

Senior Leadership Montgomery  launches in response to a Vital Living Initiative.

The program is designed for late career professionals, career transitioning professionals and retirees seeking to deepen their civic engagement, knowledge about the county and expand their community network.

Since its inception, the program has increased participants’ knowledge about county issues and community engagement through service to nonprofit organizations.

2014

Emerging Leaders Program begins to round out LM’s leadership program offerings.

The EL program is dynamic, professional development program provides next-generation leaders with the critical skills and connections essential for success.

During the program year, program participants are afforded the opportunity to learn from a mentor, enhance their resume, build their professional network, sharpen their skills in negotiation, relationship building, public speaking and conflict resolution.

2015-2016

Esther Newman retires after 25 years at the helm.

Later that year, current President and CEO, C. Marie Taylor takes over.

Realizing the potential and understanding the need to be relevant and responsive to the county’s issues, a strategic planning process was implemented in 2016 that proves instrumental in moving LM towards achieving new approaches and programs.

This plan creates  three pathways of creating community impact that guide LM operations: leadership programs, leadership engagement, and leadership in action.

2017

The Corporate Volunteer Council of Montgomery County (CVC-MC) integrates its work to become a program under Leadership Montgomery as the first move to achieving the Leadership in Action pathway.

With an overlap in mission, both organizations utilize an opportunity to offer structured opportunities for businesses to engage their employee while engaging leadership program graduates.

2018-2019

In 2018, Leadership Montgomery begins a pilot project with the introduction of Racial Equity Workshops offered through the Racial Equity Institute.

Through the pilot project, six initial workshops are scheduled, but they quickly sell out and additional dates are added.

Building on the success of the initial pilot program, Leadership Montgomery aims to deepen the impact through the launch of the REAL (Racial Equity Action Leadership) Inclusion program in October 2019.

The REAL Inclusion program will build the capacity of individuals in communities, organizations, and across systems to identify, dismantle, and transform the attitudes, behaviors, and structures that are rooted in our nation’s history of racism and dominant culture, and that continue to perpetuate racial disparities.

Today

Throughout its history, Leadership Montgomery has seen more than 2,500 leaders across all sectors graduate its programs including 8 current state delegates and 5 of the 9 current Montgomery County Council, with the 6th councilmember and 9th state delegate completing the CORE program in 2020.

Leadership Montgomery programs have also fostered relationships that have been instrumental in the creation of key programs and organizations within Montgomery County. LM is proud of a rich history of programming and events that have impacted Montgomery County.

The future is bright for Leadership Montgomery as we continue to utilize opportunities to engage leaders for the next 30 years and beyond.
